Kindiki, Gachagua Clash Over Leadership

Kenya’s Deputy President Kithure Kindiki publicly challenged former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s claims of being Mt Kenya’s political leader, saying he is the region’s senior-most figure within government. Speaking at a campaign rally in Mbeere North, Kindiki rejected efforts to define regional leadership unilaterally. The remarks come amid heightened competition ahead of the Nov. 27 by-elections, where both leaders are campaigning for rival candidates. Gachagua has accused the government of using state resources in the contest.
