Risch Urges Sanctions on Uganda

US Senator Jim Risch called for sanctions on Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, following Museveni’s disputed re-election to a seventh term. Risch criticized the Ugandan government for using violence, intimidation, arrests, and state resources to maintain power. He linked Uganda’s domestic repression to regional instability, including in South Sudan, and urged the US to reassess its security relationship with Uganda, warning that similar trends in Tanzania could affect other East African elections.
