Egypt expanded the scope of its military and security mission in Somalia following Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, citing heightened concerns over Red Sea security and regional stability. Sources said Cairo now prioritizes protecting Somalia’s federal government and preventing external influence that could threaten its interests. Egypt already has troops, advisers, and counterterrorism support in Somalia under a bilateral defence agreement and plans to join a new African Union peacekeeping mission.
