US Senator Jim Risch called for sanctions on Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, following Museveni’s disputed re-election to a seventh term. Risch criticized the Ugandan government for using violence, intimidation, arrests, and state resources to maintain power. He linked Uganda’s domestic repression to regional instability, including in South Sudan, and urged the US to reassess its security relationship with Uganda, warning that similar trends in Tanzania could affect other East African elections.
The European Union expressed concerns about Uganda’s general elections following President Yoweri Museveni’s re-election. It cited violence, intimidation, and limits on political space. The EU highlighted arbitrary arrests, an uneven campaign environment, and a nationwide internet shutdown. It also raised concerns about alleged assaults on opposition leader Bobi Wine and his family. The bloc urged restraint, called for protection of political actors, and said it will continue engaging with Ugandan authorities.
Lt. General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, head of Uganda’s land forces and son of President Yoweri Museveni, announced that opposition leader Bobi Wine will be barred from participating in future elections, citing national security. Security operations during the vote included an internet blackout and actions targeting opposition supporters.
National Unity Platform candidate Ronald Nsubuga Balimwezo won the Kampala lord mayor race, defeating incumbent Erias Lukwago and seven other candidates. Electoral officials said Balimwezo polled 141,220 votes, ending Lukwago’s 15-year tenure at City Hall. The result strengthens NUP’s hold on the capital and signals voter support for new leadership focused on urban services, accountability, and cooperation with Kampala Capital City Authority officials.
Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine reported that security forces raided his home in Magere, claiming that his wife was held at gunpoint and some household items were taken. Wine said his wife was hospitalized after the incident. The claims follow President Yoweri Museveni’s recent election victory, which has faced allegations of irregularities. The Ugandan government has not publicly responded to the reports.
