Two major legal challenges put pressure on President Hakainde Hichilema. PF candidate Makebi Zulu petitioned the constitutional court, accusing the President of unlawfully attempting to revive the voided Bill 7 and breaching multiple constitutional provisions. In a separate case, the court removed Hichilema from a petition challenging his 2026 eligibility. The ruling stated that he cannot be sued over executive decisions. The parallel cases heighten political tensions and raise questions about constitutional governance.
Zambia has released the Technical Committee’s full report on proposed constitutional reforms, emphasizing government transparency as Parliament reviews Amendment Bill 7. The document reflects over 11,800 public submissions and proposes major governance changes, including mixed-member proportional representation, constituency reforms, and new rules on ministerial appointments. A Select Committee is currently gathering stakeholder input ahead of a December parliamentary debate. The process continues despite criticism over the bill’s legality and procedure.
A petition against the Law Association of Zambia caused national debate over institutional neutrality. Members are accusing LAZ’s leadership of drifting into partisan territory through its association with the Oasis Forum. Petitioners have demanded an Extraordinary General Meeting to clarify who authorized recent statements on constitutional reform and to reaffirm LAZ’s mandate of political neutrality. The controversy reflects wider concerns about civil society bodies being used to advance individual or factional agendas.
Zambia will hold a by-election in Chawama after Parliament declared Tasila Lungu’s seat vacant due to prolonged absence linked to her father’s burial dispute. Speaker Nelly Mutti ruled that personal circumstances could not override constitutional duties, despite claims the decision was politically motivated. Deputy Chief Whip Likando Mufalali defended the move, saying Lungu failed to engage Parliament. The by-election now becomes a key test for PF relevance and UPND urban support.
Patriotic Front presidential aspirant Makebi Zulu, along with Richard Musukwa and Chanda Kabwe, survived a road accident on the Mpika–Kasama Road while travelling to the funeral of Kasama Mayor Theresa Kolala Khumalo. Their vehicle overturned as the driver swerved to avoid a cyclist. All three were taken to Kasama General Hospital and are reported stable, with tests ongoing. The incident comes as Zulu campaigns for PF leadership ahead of the 2026 elections.
Former UKA chairperson Sakwiba Sikota has launched the We Are One Zambia Alliance (WOZA), bringing together five opposition parties to challenge government policy and rising living costs. The coalition pledges price controls, subsidies, stronger social protection, and anti-corruption reforms. It also promises support for agriculture, improved public services, and a pragmatic strategy to end load shedding. WOZA leaders urged citizens to back the alliance as a new platform for inclusive governance.
