Uganda is building Africa’s first artificial intelligence data centre to provide high-performance computing and local data storage for governments, universities, startups, and researchers. The facility will support AI training, machine learning, and big data while keeping sensitive data on the continent to improve speed and regulatory compliance. Located near the Karuma Hydropower Plant, the centre aims to expand skills, research, and regional access, and developers plan to begin operations later this year.
A regional report suggests that Uganda and other East African countries can enhance food production by leveraging AI and digital farming tools, but must address policy, financing, and delivery gaps. The 2025 Annual Trends and Outlook Report finds existing technologies can improve yields, cut losses, and manage climate risks. It urges investment in digital infrastructure, research, and farmer access as countries implement the Kampala Declaration under the CAADP agenda.
Kyanja High School in Uganda won the 2026 Zayed Sustainability Prize for Sub-Saharan Africa for its student-led EcoLoop project, a circular farming system that combines duck and fish production. The project cuts waste, improves nutrition, and strengthens food security. Backed by a US $150,000 award, EcoLoop will train over 300 students a year and expand to dozens of schools and communities, reaching hundreds of households.
