Ethiopia launched the Digital Ethiopia 2030 Strategy to accelerate economic digitization and expand technology use across all sectors. Approved by the Council of Ministers, the plan aims to strengthen digital infrastructure, boost technological capacity, and create new economic opportunities, particularly for youth. The initiative succeeds the Digital Ethiopia 2025 Strategy, which officials said achieved its targets. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said the new strategy will enhance service delivery through automation and advanced digital systems.
Ethiopia invited German companies to pursue investment opportunities during the Ethiopia–Germany Business Forum in Berlin. State Minister of Finance Semereta Sewasew highlighted the Homegrown Economic Reform Agenda, citing sector liberalization, SOE restructuring, and regulatory upgrades that support a predictable investment environment. Ethiopian officials outlined progress in inflation control, foreign-reserve growth, and digital services. German business leaders expressed interest in areas including renewable energy, manufacturing, digital innovation, pharmaceuticals, and agro-processing.
Ethiopia’s central bank held a high-level consultation with major coffee, sesame, and pulses exporters to address gaps in foreign-currency repatriation. Governor Eyob Tekalign said the National Bank of Ethiopia aims to strengthen compliance through partnership rather than enforcement, emphasizing timely and transparent return of export earnings. The bank said it remains focused on protecting national economic interests, improving accountability, and reinforcing the integrity of the country’s foreign-exchange management system.
UNESCO Representative Rita Bissoonauth led diplomats to Harar Jugol as part of efforts to strengthen Ethiopia’s tourism economy and attract international investment. She said the country’s 13th World Heritage Sites offer significant revenue potential and can drive local job creation when adequately marketed and protected. UNESCO emphasized that improved global visibility and confidence in site safety are essential for boosting tourist arrivals, expanding tourism-related businesses, and increasing foreign-exchange earnings.
Ethio Telecom expanded its electric-vehicle charging network by opening a new super-fast station in Addis Ababa, adding 16 high-capacity chargers to its portfolio. CEO Frehiwot Tamru said the rollout strengthens the company’s national infrastructure and supports rising demand for commercial EV-charging services. The AI-enabled system targets compatibility gaps in the local market. Ethio Telecom’s three stations now serve up to 48 vehicles, complementing earlier sites that have delivered more than 165,000 paid charging sessions.
Ethiopia presented the Bishoftu International Airport project to global investors at the Africa Investment Forum, drawing strong interest from development partners, lenders, and export-credit agencies. Led by Ethiopian Airlines Group, the USD 12.5 billion first phase will handle 60 million passengers, with full capacity projected at 110 million. The project includes major cargo facilities and an airport-city development. Officials said the hub will ease pressure on Bole Airport and strengthen Ethiopia’s regional aviation competitiveness.
Ethiopia was elected President of the UNECA Committee on Social Policy, Poverty and Gender for 2025–2027, a role the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said reflects its commitment to multilateral cooperation. The committee guides UNECA’s work on social development, gender equality, employment, youth issues, and urbanization, and reviews regional trends and major conference outcomes. Ethiopia will serve alongside Equatorial Guinea, Senegal, Eswatini, and Mauritania, marking its return to committee leadership after previously serving in 1996.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed appointed Ambassador Betre Mengistu Berhanu as head of the Special Cabinet Office, effective Dec. 2. Betre previously served as Chief of Protocol, overseeing diplomatic engagements and high-level visits, and was recently appointed an ambassador. In his new role, he will manage the office’s operations and coordinate strategic initiatives to support the Prime Minister’s policy agenda and intergovernmental priorities.
Ethiopia appointed Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos as President-Designate of COP32 after being selected to host the UN climate summit. The Office of the Prime Minister said he will begin coordinating preparations with national institutions, UNFCCC bodies, and international partners. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed thanked member states for their confidence in Ethiopia, noting the appointment reflects the country’s growing role in global climate diplomacy and its commitment to leading the conference’s organizational and negotiation processes.
