In the first half of 2025, Kenya Airways posted a Ksh 12.15 billion net loss, reversing a Ksh 513 million profit in the same period last year. On July 30, 2025, Presidents William Ruto of Kenya and Yoweri Museveni of Uganda signed eight new bilateral Memoranda of Understanding in Nairobi. They pledged to eliminate tariff and non-tariff trade barriers, streamline border congestion, and improve standards and quality assurance under the East African Community framework. The deals span trade, infrastructure, agriculture, mining, and urban development to enhance regional integration and economic cooperation.

The initiative centers on helping micro-businesses, those with fewer than ten employees, scale into small and medium enterprises through digital tools, training (via the “Grow with Safaricom Business” forums), credit access, and tailored tech solutions. Safaricom says MSMEs generated nearly 40% of GDP and employ around 80% of Kenyans.

In August 2025, Kenya’s annual inflation rate rose to 4.5%, up from 4.1% in July, driven primarily by higher food and transport costs, according to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics. Monthly inflation also rose to 0.3%, up from 0.1%. Despite the increase, inflation remains within the Central Bank of Kenya’s medium-term target range of 2.5 to 7.5%.

On August 29, 2025, the Project Management Institute (PMI) reported that Kenya is losing over Sh600 billion in stalled or mismanaged public projects across sectors, including infrastructure, energy, water, and ICT. High-profile examples are the unfinished Aror and Kimwarer dams, which have already cost Sh63 billion. PMI attributes the waste to poor planning, corruption, weak supervision, delayed payments, and unqualified project managers, and is calling for legislation to regulate the profession.

Between May and June 2025, Kenya’s key agricultural exports declined sharply. Coffee exports fell from 7,400 to 4,600 metric tonnes, with earnings dropping from KSh 7.4 billion to KSh 4.5 billion during the Nairobi Coffee Exchange’s June recess. Flower and vegetable exports also fell, affected by EU market rules and lower production. Tea exports dropped 12.05% in the first half of 2025, contributing to a 3.06% overall export decline and widening the trade deficit.

Kenya will host the 24th COMESA Heads of State and Government Summit in Nairobi from October 7 to 9, 2025, with the COMESA Business Forum and Council of Ministers meeting preceding it (October 7–8). Preparations are underway, led by a multi-agency organizing committee chaired by Kenya’s COMESA focal point. During the summit, Kenya will assume the rotating chairmanship of the regional bloc and seek to strengthen regional economic integration.
