Uganda’s electoral commission set January 15, 2026, for the general elections. President Yoweri Museveni, 81, who has led the country since 1986, will seek another term. His main challenger is opposition leader Bobi Wine, also known as Robert Kyagulanyi. Six additional candidates will contest the presidency. Ugandans will also elect members of parliament during the polls, according to the commission and local media reports.
Uganda President Yoweri Museveni appeared publicly at a campaign rally in Paridi Stadium, Adjumani, on Oct. 20, 2025, ending weeks of speculation about his health. The 81-year-old walked unaided, addressed supporters, and answered questions from party members. His public return follows confirmation by the Electoral Commission that he will appear on the January 2026 presidential ballot. Museveni has been endorsed as the National Resistance Movement’s flagbearer and is expected to face opposition from Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine).
The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) and the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) are vying for political influence in Uganda’s Rwenzori region ahead of the 2026 elections. In Kasese District, which had more than 384,000 registered voters in 2021, FDC is fielding 14 candidates to reclaim lost parliamentary seats. Both parties face internal divisions, with defections weakening the opposition and rifts emerging within the NRM. FDC completed nominations with several candidates unopposed.
The Uganda National Teachers’ Union ended its strike after reaching a temporary deal with Parliament to address pay gaps between science and arts teachers. Lawmakers have two weeks to resolve the issue after four weeks of talks. Speaker Anita Among directed committees to investigate. The union urged teachers to return to work but warned it would resume the strike if no progress follows.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held bilateral meetings during the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit in Kampala to strengthen economic, political, and multilateral cooperation. He met with leaders from Uganda, Palestine, Algeria, Belarus, and others, reaffirming Iran’s commitment to expanding ties and supporting Palestine’s right to self-determination. Araghchi and several counterparts condemned unilateralism and agreed to enhance coordination within NAM. Iran and Uganda also pledged to advance joint economic initiatives.
A new study confirmed the 256-kilometer Kenya–Uganda Expressway is viable and ready for investment. The African Development Bank supported the project through the East African Community framework, using a NEPAD grant. Government, private-sector, and financial leaders endorsed it at a Kampala conference. The expressway will boost transport along the Northern Corridor, cut transit times, and reduce congestion at border points such as Busia.
