Ethiopia was elected President of the UNECA Committee on Social Policy, Poverty and Gender for 2025–2027, a role the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said reflects its commitment to multilateral cooperation. The committee guides UNECA’s work on social development, gender equality, employment, youth issues, and urbanization, and reviews regional trends and major conference outcomes. Ethiopia will serve alongside Equatorial Guinea, Senegal, Eswatini, and Mauritania, marking its return to committee leadership after previously serving in 1996.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed appointed Ambassador Betre Mengistu Berhanu as head of the Special Cabinet Office, effective Dec. 2. Betre previously served as Chief of Protocol, overseeing diplomatic engagements and high-level visits, and was recently appointed an ambassador. In his new role, he will manage the office’s operations and coordinate strategic initiatives to support the Prime Minister’s policy agenda and intergovernmental priorities.

Ethiopia appointed Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos as President-Designate of COP32 after being selected to host the UN climate summit. The Office of the Prime Minister said he will begin coordinating preparations with national institutions, UNFCCC bodies, and international partners. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed thanked member states for their confidence in Ethiopia, noting the appointment reflects the country’s growing role in global climate diplomacy and its commitment to leading the conference’s organizational and negotiation processes.

France’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, Alexis Lamek, praised the country’s rapid institutional and infrastructural transformation during a meeting with Prosperity Party Deputy President Adem Farah. He highlighted improvements in efficiency, urban development, and Ethiopia’s expanding international engagement. Both sides underscored the long-standing depth of Ethio–France relations and reaffirmed commitments to cooperation in governance, cultural exchanges, and institutional strengthening. Ethiopia briefed the delegation on ongoing reforms and preparations for national elections.

Ethiopian President Taye Atske Selassie told the Conference of Constitutional Jurisdictions of Africa that strong constitutions are essential for accountable governance and the protection of citizens’ rights. Speaking in Addis Ababa, he said constitutionalism must ensure the rule of law, clear limits on state power, and legitimacy rooted in public consent. AU and CCJA officials added that independent courts and respect for constitutional mandates are critical to stability and Africa’s Agenda 2063 goals.

Ethiopia’s Institute of Foreign Affairs said the country’s participation in the G20 summit demonstrated its growing diplomatic influence and capacity to engage major economies. Executive Director Jafar Bedru noted that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed held productive bilateral meetings and highlighted Ethiopia’s progress in sectors including agriculture, manufacturing, urban development, and digitalization. He said Ethiopia is shaping Africa’s development agenda at global forums, adding that recent BRICS membership further strengthens its international standing.
