The African Union Peace and Security Council condemned Israel’s recognition of Somaliland as an independent state, calling the move illegal and a threat to Somalia’s sovereignty and regional stability. The council said no actor has the authority to alter the borders of an AU member state and urged an immediate reversal. It reaffirmed support for Somalia’s unity and called on member states and partners to uphold international law.
The Immigration and Citizenship Agency of Somalia launched an investigation into reports alleging unauthorized use of Somalia’s airspace and airports to facilitate the movement of a fugitive political figure from Yemen. The agency said the probe will assess possible breaches of national law, procedures, and sovereignty. Officials warned that any confirmed violations would be serious offences and pledged accountability, stressing Somalia’s commitment to the rule of law and international legal frameworks.
Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud condemned actions by Somaliland authorities, warning they threaten Somalia’s unity and sovereignty. In a televised address, he accused the breakaway region of abandoning dialogue and pursuing foreign-backed recognition efforts, including a disputed agreement with Ethiopia. Mohamud said Somalia’s territorial integrity cannot be altered by external actors and urged renewed dialogue, stressing that lasting recognition can only emerge through a Somali-led political settlement.
China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi postponed a planned visit to Somalia, with officials citing undisclosed scheduling commitments. Somali authorities had prepared for the trip, including temporary road closures, but no immediate government statement was issued following the delay. The visit was part of China’s annual diplomatic outreach to Africa, which included high-level engagements. Officials said the trip will be rescheduled, underscoring continued ties between China and Somalia.
A high-level Turkish security delegation arrived in Mogadishu to strengthen cooperation with Somalia on security and policing. The team, led by Ünsal Hayal, was received by senior officers of the Somali Police Force. Somali officials said the visit aims to deepen bilateral ties, enhance security coordination, and expand collaboration in policing. Talks with senior government officials are expected to focus on strategic security partnerships.
Somalia’s parliamentary speaker, Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur, warned lawmakers about frequent absenteeism after a session was postponed for lack of quorum. He said repeated failures by MPs to attend sittings undermine the House of the People’s work. Madobe announced that absent legislators risk losing entitlements under parliamentary rules. The warning comes as Somalia faces pressure to pass key legislation amid heightened political and diplomatic tensions.
