Ethiopia has recorded a significant reduction in maternal and infant mortality following sustained health sector investments, the Ministry of Health said. The ministry reported higher rates of facility-based childbirth, expanded maternal health services, and wider access to surgical and emergency services. Officials cited the growing number of voluntary blood donors as key to reducing postpartum hemorrhage. The gains were highlighted during Healthy Motherhood Month, which promotes sustainable financing and innovation in maternal and newborn care.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has praised Ethiopia for its leadership in managing one of Africa’s largest refugee and internal displacement situations amid declining global humanitarian funding. UNHCR said Ethiopia hosts more than one million refugees from neighboring countries and continues to support internally displaced people affected by conflict and climate shocks. The agency highlighted Ethiopia’s inclusive asylum policy, strong institutions, and close coordination with the government and host communities.

The Ethiopian Council of Ministers approved new regulations covering mining, housing, finance, health, immigration, aviation security, cooperatives, sports, and public service delivery. The cabinet authorized mining license agreements to increase fertilizer supply and foreign exchange earnings. It endorsed a new housing policy and reviewed a $30 million concessional loan for medical equipment. Several revised proclamations were sent to parliament for ratification.

Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates reaffirmed their strategic partnership during high-level talks held during a working visit by UAE Minister of State Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan Al Nahyan. The discussions focused on regional peace and security, humanitarian access in Sudan, and cooperation on climate and water priorities. Both sides pledged continued collaboration on humanitarian protection, sustainable development, and preparations for upcoming global forums, including COP32 and the UN Water Conference.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said Ethiopia and China had entered a new phase of cooperation after elevating ties to an all-weather strategic partnership. He met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to discuss expanding collaboration in trade, infrastructure, energy, transport, and emerging sectors. The talks also covered the digital economy, artificial intelligence, green energy, and regional issues, reaffirming commitments to development, mutual prosperity, and sustained diplomatic engagement between both governments and their peoples.

Ethiopia’s House of People’s Representatives has approved the appointment of Haymanot Zeleke as Director General of the Ethiopian Media Authority. Lawmakers unanimously endorsed her nomination after reviewing her professional background and leadership experience. Zeleke previously worked at the Ethiopian News Agency and the Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation and held senior communication roles within the Addis Ababa City Administration. She is expected to oversee media regulation and strengthen institutional governance within the sector.
