1. FQM Invests to Lift Copper Output

First Quantum Minerals (FQM) is expanding investments to help Zambia reach its goal of producing 3 million tons of copper annually by 2032. The company plans to boost output through advanced technology, local participation, and sustainable mining practices while partnering with ZESCO and others to strengthen the national power grid. FQM’s initiatives align with Zambia’s record production surge and $10 billion in new mining investments amid rising global copper demand.

2. Zambia Commissions Ishima Grid Project

Zambia commissioned the Ishima Grid Development Project in the Zambezi District to expand rural electricity access. Funded by the government and implemented by ZESCO and the Rural Electrification Authority, the project cost over ZK7 million ($310,000) and added 330 new connections, including 18 public facilities and 312 households. It extended 9.2 km of 33kV grid lines and 8.8 km of distribution lines, improving livelihoods and supporting economic growth in Chief Ishima’s area.

3. Zambia Expands Solar Access

Zambia launched four new solar minigrids in Kapiri Mposhi by the Rural Electrification Authority. The installations provide electricity to more than 2,600 households, schools, health centers, and small businesses. The project supports government plans to deploy 1,000 minigrids nationwide, with 55 sites completed so far. Acting CEO Alex Mbumba said reliable solar power is improving livelihoods, including enabling dairy farmers to process and store milk efficiently.

4. AgDevCo Invests in Zambia Poultry

AgDevCo invested $10 million in Zambia’s Hybrid Poultry to build a modern abattoir and expand processing capacity. The project will create about 270 direct jobs and support local skills development while enabling exports to Lubumbashi in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Hybrid, part of the African Poultry Development Group, works with over 2,000 smallholder farmers. The new facility will use sustainable technologies to meet growing domestic and regional poultry demand.

5. Standards Delaying Regional Trade MoU

The Zimbabwe Mercantile Exchange says it delayed implementing its MoU with commodity exchanges in Malawi, Zambia, and Tanzania due to a lack of harmonized trading standards. The March 2025 agreement aims to boost cross-border commodity trade and capital mobilization. CEO Collen Tapfumaneyi said partners must align grading systems, quality standards, and regulatory clearances before trading starts under the African Continental Free Trade Area framework.

6. Zambia–Malawi Cross-Border Payment Link

The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa launched its first interoperable cross-border payment system connecting Zambia and Malawi. The Digital Retail Payments Platform allows instant, low-cost transactions in local currencies, reducing reliance on foreign exchange. Supervised by the central banks of both countries, the system links banks, fintechs, and mobile-money providers. COMESA leaders said the platform will enhance regional trade, financial inclusion, and digital integration across member states.
