Zambia commissioned the Ishima Grid Development Project in the Zambezi District to expand rural electricity access. Funded by the government and implemented by ZESCO and the Rural Electrification Authority, the project cost over ZK7 million ($310,000) and added 330 new connections, including 18 public facilities and 312 households. Zambia launched four new solar minigrids in Kapiri Mposhi by the Rural Electrification Authority. AgDevCo invested $10 million in Zambia’s Hybrid Poultry to build a modern abattoir and expand processing capacity. Hybrid, part of the African Poultry Development Group, works with over 2,000 smallholder farmers. The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa launched its first interoperable cross-border payment system connecting Zambia and Malawi. The Digital Retail Payments Platform allows instant, low-cost transactions in local currencies, reducing reliance on foreign exchange. Supervised by the central banks of both countries, the system links banks, fintechs, and mobile-money providers. COMESA leaders said the platform will enhance regional trade, financial inclusion, and digital integration across member states.
